What is a water filter and why do you need one?
Water filtration has become a necessity more than a simple convenience. 90% of North America has hard water, and this is only one aspect to take into consideration when evaluating a water filtration system. When considering water filters, it boils down to two categories: water softeners, and reverse osmosis systems. Other types of systems can also be regarded such as UV sterilization solutions and specific water filter components. But we will address them in another article.
What is a water softener and how does it work? To be able to understand how a water softener works, it is best to know why you need one in the first place. The quality of water we use in our homes is dependent on its source. So how hard your particular water is would need to be determined by a water filtration specialist. But in essence, when rain falls on the ground, and it seeps down to the aquifers, it picks up small particles of limestone and other minerals. All these impurities travel alongside the water intended for your home to a municipal water plant. Depending on where you live, the water plant that provides your home with water might combine that aquifer water with drainage water, treating it before dispensing it back to your home. So all these intricate water piping systems also accumulate impurities themselves. Further justifying the need for the use of water filters. Sufficient to know that the water that you get in your home is hardened by the way it travels from rainfall to your home.
How does water softening work?
To soften the water, a special resin has been developed. This specially formulated resin is design to capture all the hardening impurities in the water. To illustrate this, picture the impurities bonding to the resin. But what happens when the resin is saturated with contaminants? A specialized valve will wash the resign with salted water called brine. The brine water displaces the impurities out of the resign. Then it washes the resign one more time to get rid of the salt particles, leaving the resin in a pristine state to enable it to soften the water once again.
The Sweet Water USA difference.
Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality water. That is why every water softener installation we perform comes with a pre-sediment water filter. This filter helps in two ways. Firstly, it adds one more water filtration to your home, capturing the most significant particles before they enter into your softening system. Secondly, since the water is being prefiltered, this will extend the useful life of your water softener bringing even more value to our offering.
Reverse Osmosis System
When it comes to the water, you intend to use for drinking or cooking; a water softener will not be the ideal solution. As we explained before, a water softener only removes the hardness in water, but many more impurities and chemicals are still present after the water softener. Water treatment plants add chemicals to water in an effort to control pathogens that can harm our health. Although these added substances are there to make our water safe for drinking, they do add a bad taste to water, and it is always better to remove them before we drink them. That is why our five-stage water filter solution is the best. It includes not only one but three components to help remove these bad tasting chemicals from our water. But when you are talking about a Reverse Osmosis System, at the very heart of the solution is the RO membrane. This filtration component is specially engineered to remove the smallest of particles in your drinking water. It can even stop bacteria and viruses from passing through. Leaving only clean, healthy drinking water behind. But once again, our systems go beyond the competition’s offerings, by adding an additional component to our water filtration system. One specially designed to control the acidity in water, providing you with pure, healthy alkaline water!
